The Cabinet of Dr. Algorithm






What does reality look like when it is reconstructed through the eyes of an algorithm?

The Cabinet of Dr. Algorithm explores how everyday reality becomes material for machine perception. A sensor installed in the exhibition space continuously collects traces of its surroundings - light, sound, movement, and images of people passing through the space. Visitors may simply encounter it as a small illuminated device, without necessarily realizing that they are becoming subjects of its observation.

Nearby, a screen presents a continuously evolving media artwork generated from data previously collected by the system. Fragments of people, spaces, light, and environmental signals are transformed and recomposed into an unfamiliar visual world. What appears on the screen is therefore neither a direct reflection of the present nor a documentation of the past, but a reality reconstructed from what the machine has perceived and retained.

The installation creates an asymmetry between seeing and being seen. While viewers watch the images produced by the system, they may simultaneously be contributing new traces to its archive.

How?



The installation operates as a continuous cycle of observation, collection, and reconstruction. Sensors capture traces of the surrounding environment - including light, sound, movement, and the presence of visitors. 

Without necessarily being aware of it, viewers become subjects of the system’s observation. These collected traces accumulate as data and are later processed and reinterpreted into generative moving images.
