Little Dust is an XR (Extended Reality) solution designed to turn cleanup into a playful learning experience. Using beam projection on the floor, it guides children to return toys to the correct shelves, while parents can monitor progress remotely through a companion mobile app. By making the process interactive and engaging, Little Dust helps children build independent cleaning habits in a natural and enjoyable way.

To realize the goal of “making cleaning fun,” Little Dust adopts a visual identity that emphasizes joy, immersion, friendliness, and efficiency. Rounded forms and soft textures in warm blue tones are applied consistently across hardware, software, and content design. The beam-projected interface delivers animated visual cues and character-based audio feedback, making it easy for children with limited attention spans to follow the cleaning process. Meanwhile, the companion smartphone app presents key information in a streamlined single-page UI, enabling parents to quickly and accurately monitor their child’s progress.

Function

The Little Dust hardware integrates a camera, a computer vision chipset, and a beam projection module. It can be mounted on any elevated surface (e.g., a bookshelf) with visibility over the play area and toy boxes.

Once installed, the computer vision system continuously tracks the positions of toys, storage boxes, and children’s movements. At cleanup time, the projection module overlays animated visual cues around each toy, guiding children to return items to their designated boxes. A behavior-driven feedback system reinforces positive actions, enabling children to naturally acquire cleanup habits. After each session, the device automatically generates and delivers a one-minute video summary to parents via the companion app.

User Study

We conducted a user study with five parent-child groups (children aged 5-7) using a Wizard of Oz and follow-up interviews. The study showed that Little Dust was intuitive and enjoyable for children, encouraged habit formation, and helped reduce parental stress around cleanup. These findings validated the system’s potential to foster positive cleaning behaviors and strengthen parent-child relationships.
